Downpipe not discharging into stormwater drain

Cause

Downpipe is too short

Repair

  • extend the length of the downpipe so water is carried directly into the drain. With proprietary PVC systems, ready-made connectors are available. Pipes and connectors are generally welded together with solvent cement. Secure the downpipe against the wall with brackets no more than 1200 mm apart, fixing each bracket with 2 stainless steel screws

  • downpipes carrying rainwater should drain to stormwater systems or soak pits, not to wastewater gully traps

Cause

Spouting outlet to drain is broken or blocked

Repair

  • when working at height, always let someone know. Ensure the ladder is safe and is securely set up

  • if outlet is blocked, clear it and then begin a regular maintenance programme to keep it clear, six-monthly, quarterly, or as often as necessary

  • if outlet is frequently blocked with leaves or twigs, trim back the trees or install leaf guards over the gutters and leaf screens on downpipes

  • if the outlet is broken, repair it or replace the unit. With proprietary PVC systems, ready-made outlets are available, together with fixings to secure the outlet to the fascia. PVC elements in systems are generally fixed together with solvent cement

Cause

Stormwater drain is blocked

Repair

  • remove any obvious blocking materials (such as leaves/twigs or rubbish). Always pull the blockage out – avoid pushing it further down the drain

  • if drain cannot easily be unblocked, call a registered plumber or drain clearing company

  • if the system is frequently blocked with leaves or twigs, install leaf guards over the gutters and leaf screens on downpipes

  • ensure that rainwater discharges to a stormwater system or soakpit and not to a wastewater gully trap

Cause

Downpipe not aligned to drain

Repair

  • reinstall the downpipe so it aligns with the drain. Proprietary PVC systems are widely available

  • secure the downpipe against the wall with brackets no more than 1200 mm apart, fixing each clip with 2 stainless steel screws

  • ensure rainwater discharges to a stormwater system or soakpit and not to a wastewater gully trap

Cause

Joints in downpipe have separated

Repair

  • remove and reinstall the downpipe with remade sealed joints. Use new joints or pipes if necessary. Joints in PVC systems typically fit together and are welded with solvent cement

  • secure the downpipe against the wall with brackets no more than 1200 mm apart, fixing each clip with 2 stainless steel screws
