Leak around fixings of TV aerials and satellite dishes
Cause
Sealing washers to fixings were left out at installation
Repair
- roof leaks should be attended to without delay to avoid the risk of damage below the roof cladding
- if the TV aerial or satellite dish was installed recently by a tradesperson or company installer, call them back to fix the problem
- fixings for aerials and dishes through roof claddings should include sealing washers to keep the penetration weathertight
- the fixing (and the washer) should be appropriate for the roof cladding type and profile
- when the fixing is installed, the washer (often made from EPDM) should compress slightly when the fixing is tightened to provide a good seal against the cladding. Don’t overtighten the fixing
- ensure all materials are compatible. In E2/AS1, Tables 20 and 21 refer to materials in contact and materials subject to runoff view here
- when using a ladder to climb onto a roof, ensure it is on a firm and level base. The base should be 1.0 metre out from the wall for every 4.0 metres of height. Secure the top of the ladder where possible
