Wall framing location is visible

Cause

Condensation forming on the areas between the framing because the wall is not insulated – mould growth is the result of regular condensation

Repair

  • if paint-finished, wash the wall to remove mould/mildew; treat with fungicide before repainting
  • if wallpaper-finished, remove the wallpaper; treat wall with fungicide before re-papering
  • if possible insulate the wall (retrofitting wall insulation requires a building consent); alternatively investigate and address possible causes of high internal moisture levels such as:
    • no mechanical extract ventilation in kitchen/bathroom/laundry - moisture migrates to coldest region of the house
    • use of unflued gas heating raising internal moisture levels
    • regularly drying clothes on racks indoors
    • clothes dryer not vented to the outside
    • heating not or seldom used in the room
  • reduce internal moisture levels, increase heating and increase cleaning frequency when mould forms on framing lines

Cause

Mould is forming on the framing locations because a thermal bridge (framing has lower thermal performance than the insulated part of the wall)
